IV Sedation – For Dentistry
And Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery
State Board Requirements:
Most states require refresher training every two years. Each state has guidelines for both didactic and/or clinical experiences. Check with your local State Board for the specific regulations in your state and we will make every effort to help you comply with their requirements.
ASAASD is sponsoring the 2026 renewal program for sedation dentists and oral and maxillofacial surgeons renewing enteral, PCS and GA certificates. The program spans two days with participants able to choose one or both afternoon sessions for virtual participation, the full day Friday in person including hands-on or the entire package
When both days are taken together, each attendee will receive 13 hours CE credit for re-certification. The course is pending approval by the NJ State Board of Dentistry.

Outline: This program is designed for dentists who provide advanced anesthesia services and oral and maxillofacial surgeons as well as the critical members of their teams.
The focus is on patient safety through compliance, preparedness and coordinated team effort. The Thursday afternoon session will
include a presentation on drug interactions of significance to the sedation practitioner as well as a clinically oriented review of cardiac and respiratory physiology and the monitoring of those functions during procedural sedation. The Friday morning session will take place in the SimLab where realistic scenarios will be used to enhance team competency and efficiency in the face of anesthetic adversity. The first afternoon didactic session will review the medications, equipment and protocols that must be
in place in New Jersey dental and oral & maxillofacial surgery offices where advanced anesthesia services are provided.
The program concludes with a discussion of the patient selection process emphasizing the more challenging patients seeking anesthesia services.
Objectives : At the conclusion of the program, participants will be able to:
1. Describe the emergency management of a sedated patient with respiratory difficulty;
2. Discuss the roles of team members in the event of cardiac arrest;
3. Select appropriate emergency medications for five of the most common anesthesia-related
emergencies ambulatory anesthesia practice;
4. Identify patients who present for treatment under sedation who pose a significant risk and for
whom hospital-based treatment should be considered;
5. List five monitoring modalities that provide critical information about cardiac and respiratory
functions in sedated patients;
6. Discuss three potential drug-drug interactions that may be significant in the sedated dental/oral surgery patient.
